Realizing in 2015 that there was no one offering the distinctive style of bodywork called Rolfing in the Lubbock area, staff members from PforymWELL teamed up with Advanced Certified Rolfer, Jody Seay, to bring that work to the people here. A native Texan who now lives in Oregon, Jody was certified as a Rolfer in 1980, and became an Advanced Certified Rolfer in 1985. She has traveled to Tulsa for Rolfing since 1983 and now schedules Rolfing sessions in Lubbock every four to six weeks at the PforymWELL Center.
Rolfing is a unique style of body work and education which involves deep manipulation of fascia, the connective tissue network throughout the body. This work was developed by a brilliant woman, Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D., who thought up the l0-session series and began working on people in the 1930s. Over time, as word of her work and the astounding results of it spread, Dr. Rolf’s Structural Integration series came to be known as “Rolfing.” In the 1950s, after much demand, she began training others to do this work and to carry on her legacy. The Rolf Institute in Boulder, Colorado was established as the training facility. Because the standards of the Rolf Institute are so high, there are only a thousand or so Certified Rolfers in the entire world.
Things you will notice from your Rolfing sessions are increased flexibility, deeper breathing, improved posture, enhanced athletic performance, ease in your body, and a sense of comfort as you move about in the world. Although chronic aches and pains tend to clear up through Rolfing, that is not actually the goal.
The goal is to free up your body where it has become stuck and bound, to balance your structure so that you will last longer and look and feel better while you are lasting. Gravity is out to get us, we know that. In Rolfing, what we are trying to do is make friends with that force and turn the effects of it around through proper balance in the body. Gravity then becomes the therapist, rather than the nemesis.
No, you will begin to feel the results almost instantly, in the very first Rolfing session. In her research, Dr. Rolf determined that the fascial network in the human body is many, many layers. Indeed, everything within our bodies has a layer of fascia surrounding it. Thus, working through those layers is rather like peeling an onion – going layer by layer. Her 10-session series is designed to work from the outmost layers of fascia to the deeper ones. Once you begin the series, you are not obligated to continue, if that is your choice. However, we have learned that it is the best way to obtain the optimal benefit from this process. Most people are so thrilled with the results that they cannot wait until their next Rolfing session.
All kinds of people can become Rolfing clients. From housewives to movie stars to military members to farmers and ranchers, artists, TV celebrities, and professional athletes, Rolfing has positively affected the lives of millions of people all around the globe. Babies and little kids can be affected positively through Rolfing as well. Dr. Oz has been Rolfed, as have NBA players, Charles Barkley and Danny Ainge, plus several NFL players. Olympic skater, Brian Boitano, was Rolfed, too, just prior to his gold medal win. The late singer, John Denver, was a big advocate of Rolfing. Artist Georgia O’Keefe, who lived to be almost 100, credited her longevity, at least in part, to the work of her friend, Ida Rolf. You don’t have to be famous to benefit from Rolfing, but it will make you feel like a million bucks.
Jody Seay grew up in Dallas and is the granddaughter of a Texas cattle rancher. Before she became a Rolfer in 1980, Jody was working in rock ‘n roll radio in Dallas. She began her traveling Rolfing practice to Tulsa in 1983, which she continues to this day, even though she moved to Oregon in 1988. In addition to her career as a Rolfer, Jody is also a writer, speaker, and TV host. She has published two books and a musical and is about to finish a third book to be launched in the fall of 2016. In yet another stab at shameless self-promotion, Jody invites you to check out her website, creatively named www.jodyseay.com. Click on the link marked ROLFING to find out more about her journey of self-discovery. Jody is also a Licensed Massage Therapist with the State of Texas and the City of Tulsa.
Rolfing isn’t cheap, but nothing worthwhile ever is. Each session is $150 and lasts, usually, an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes or so, sometimes a little longer. These Rolfing sessions are done in your underwear or swimsuit, not in the nude, so if modesty is a concern for you, there is no need to worry.
Because Jody travels to this area every month, as opposed to being here full-time, she groups the sessions so that nobody is left in the lurch until she gets back. Some Rolfing sessions, simply because of what they do, need to be kept closer together. So, you might be doing two Rolfing sessions in the weekend she is in town. For other sessions, you can wait in between them and not lose any ground.
